OFFICE OF VICE-PROVOST FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

The Office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies provides central organization and oversight for all interdisciplinary units throughout Duke University.  The Office helps to develop and implement policies and procedures that advance the often unique administrative, research, educational, and practice needs of interdisciplinary groups.  The Office of the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies also manages two Provost’s Common Fund competitions, which offer funding for interdisciplinary activities led by faculty, and coordinates faculty hiring initiatives for the University Institutes and Centers (UICs).

Susan Roth, Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies: Professor Roth came to Duke University in 1973 as an assistant professor, and is currently a professor in the Department of Psychology and Neurosciences. She served as chair of that department from 1999-2002, and worked as special assistant in both the President's and the Provost's offices following her term as chair. Roth was appointed as Dean of the Social Sciences in Arts and Sciences in 2004 and served through the 2005-06 academic year.

Professor Roth's scholarly publications have focused on the process of coping with traumatic life events. She is well known for her studies of sexually victimized women, including clinical treatment studies of adult survivors of childhood incest, and she has served as president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Roth has been the recipient of the Trinity College Distinguished Teaching award for her Psychology of Women course, and has served as dissertation advisor for 26 Ph.D. recipients in psychology. She chaired the executive committee of Duke's Women's Initiative and the Provost's Women's Faculty Development Task Force.  A native of New York City, Roth graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University in 1970. She attended graduate school in psychology at Northwestern University, receiving her doctorate in 1973. She is married to Philip Costanzo, with whom she has one son, Anthony.

Hallie Knuffman, Special Assistant to the Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies: Ms. Knuffman is the primary liaison from the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies to centers and institutes at Duke. She supports interdisciplinary programs’ innovative administration teams that operate between interdisciplinary units and among one or more of Duke's eight academic and professional schools. She also works with the Office of Interdisciplinary Program Management (OIPM) in the development of policies and procedures that enhance the institutionalization of interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching.  Ms. Knuffman currently leads Duke’s Interdisciplinary Administrators Working Group (IAWG), and helps to manage the Provost’s Common Fund competition and the processes for creating and managing interdisciplinary units.

Ms. Knuffman joined the Provost’s Office after working with two Duke interdisciplinary units—the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions and the Center on Global Change—on a joint climate change policy research project between the two units and with the Nicholas School of the Environment. Prior to joining Duke, Ms. Knuffman coordinated the evening and weekend MBA programs at the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, and worked on international climate change policy at the non-profit Environmental Defense Fund.

Ms. Knuffman has a BA in Linguistics and Russian from Boston University and an MPA from NC State University.
