CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

University Institute-sponsored Certificates:

Ethics Certificate (Kenan Institute for Ethics)
The Ethics Certificate Program curriculum offers undergraduate students a robust examination of ethics in moral traditions, art, literary imagination and everyday life that reflect localized knowledge and experience across cultures as well as the influence of a globalized world.

Children in Contemporary Society Certificate (SSRI-affiliated Center for Child and Family Policy)

This certificate program allows undergraduate students to draw on the expertise and knowledge of Duke faculty from across the university to analyze systematically and rigorously the issues facing children, families, and the society responsible for their development, to develop the analytical skills necessary to study these issues, and to provide a context in which students can engage in research that informs policy and practice.

Global Health Certificate (Duke Global Health Institute)

The Global Health Certificate curriculum introduces an interdisciplinary approach to global health issues.  The Certificate, for undergraduate and graduate students, aims to provide future leaders with tools both to synthesize current knowledge in new ways and to formulate innovative solutions to achieve improvement in the quality of health for under served populations, and to create the requisite interdisciplinary approach that will improve the understanding of global health issues.  The requirement of relevant fieldwork complements students’ intellectual development with a practical understanding of global health issues.

Health Policy Certificate (DGHI-affiliated Center for Health Policy)

The Health Policy Certificate Program for undergraduates draws upon established research in health services centered in economics, political science, public policy and sociology but recognizes the inspired contributions to health care debates originating in the disciplines of anthropology, history, law, philosophy, psychology and religion.  Courses in the health policy certificate program offer students the opportunity to investigate the machinery of contemporary health policy-making and to understand the broad political dynamics which have conditioned American health policy, past and present, to familiarize themselves with the institutional and economic foundations of American health care through study of the interaction between the key players in health care financing and organization—employers, private insurance carriers, government regulators, health care providers and consumers; and (3) to explore the cultural and ideological underpinnings of modern conceptions of health and the recurrent ethical dilemmas facing health care providers and policy-makers.

Genome Sciences and Policy Certificate (Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy)
The Genome Sciences & Policy Certificate includes a combination of course work and direct research experience designed to expose undergraduate students to the genome sciences and their broad societal impacts. This interdisciplinary curriculum aims to enable students from a broad range of disciplines to acquire and apply knowledge and understanding of the Genome Revolution and its growing impact on their distinct fields, and to cultivate in students the interdisciplinary perspectives necessary to address current and future implications of genomics for health, science and society.

Certificate in Modeling Biological Systems (Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy)
The Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate in Modeling Biological Systems (MBS) aims to provide rigorous biological, mathematical, and computational training and an intensive independent research experience for Duke students. The overarching mission of the MBS program is to facilitate intellectual growth in our students by mentoring the development of sound reasoning skills towards complex biological models.

Computational Biology & Bioinformatics Certificate (Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy)

This program is intended for Duke graduate students enrolled in departmental MS or PhD Programs who wish to expand their current studies to apply to or include the field of computational biology & bioinformatics.

Certificate in Advanced Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences (Social Science Research Institute)
This program, administered by the Program for Advanced Research in the Social Sciences (PARISS) at SSRI, provides interested doctoral students with a coherent and integrated understanding of mathematical methods in the social sciences.  Methodology is among the great strengths of Duke University’s social science disciplines, and graduate students regularly receive excellent training relevant to their individual fields of study within existing departments.
