In fall 2007, the Academic Council of Duke University approved a process for units that are designated as University Institutes and Centers (UICs) to apply for faculty hiring authority. The hiring authority is limited to non-tenure track faculty positions (both regular and non-regular rank). UICs submit a proposal to several university faculty committees outlining the importance of faculty hires to the UIC’s mission. Faculty hired through this process are hired directly into the UIC. Three Institutes—DGHI, SSRI and IGSP—have been granted authority so far, and others are applying through this unique process.
